Why is Key West So Haunted?

Port towns are some of the most notoriously haunted cities across the globe. In the United States, ports along Spanish trade routes such as New Orleans, Key West, St. Augustine, Savannah, and Charleston consistently rank as America’s most haunted.

Something In The Water…

Water and salt may be responsible for some of the spirit activities. Flowing water acts as an energy source for spirits, while salt is believed to create a barrier that spirits have difficulty crossing. Key West is surrounded by salt water, which simultaneously energizes the spirits and makes it challenging for them to leave.

Island of Bones …

Even the name “Key West” is derived from the Spanish ‘cayo hueso’ meaning ‘island of bones’. Spanish explorers charting the Florida Keys used the name to describe the island covered with human remains. Historians suggest the bones were spread across the island as the result of a battle between warring tribes or that Key West was a sacred ground for funeral rituals and water burials.

An Island Connection…

Key West has never been an easy place to survive. Hurricanes, fires, tropical diseases, and wars accompanied the booms and busts of shipwrecking, salt manufacturing, sponging, cigar making, and the search for pink gold. Few people stay in Key West because they have to. People stay here because they love the island. Perhaps this explains why, in death, so many of them are still not ready to leave.
